The Zika virus has been declared an epidemic by the World Health Organization. The Pennsylvania Dept. of Health recently confirmed that two people from Pennsylvania have been diagnosed with Zika virus. These individuals traveled to countries affected by the ongoing outbreak of the disease.

At Capital BlueCross, we are monitoring the situation closely and understand our customers may have questions and concerns about the mosquito-borne virus. The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. It is of significant concern to women who are pregnant, as it can lead to the serious birth defect microcephaly, a condition in which a baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared to babies of the same sex and age.

For more information, Capital BlueCross suggests you visit the Centers for Disease Control. You will find comprehensive information on the Zika virus, including symptoms, prevention tips and information on what to do if you are diagnosed.

You can also visit the Pa. Dept. of Health.
