Capital BlueCross Encourages Healthy Dental Habits during National Children’s Dental Health Month
HARRISBURG, Pa. (Feb. 18, 2016) – Capital BlueCross recognizes that healthy dental habits lead to better overall health. In support of National Children’s Dental Health Month, the company brought a Healthy Habits Health Fair today to the West Shore School District to teach young children the importance of taking care of their teeth. More than 200 first, second and third grade students at Washington Heights Elementary School in Lemoyne participated in the event.
Children learned proper brushing and flossing techniques and what a well-balanced, nutrient-rich meal looks like. Health and wellness experts from the Capital Blue retail store in Enola also held an interactive session using a puppet to teach children how important a calcium-rich diet is for bone health and strong teeth.
“At Capital BlueCross, we are committed to helping people live healthy and that includes dental health. Brushing and flossing are critical components, but we also want children to understand that eating properly plays an important role as well,” said Jen Carricato, Capital BlueCross senior health education consultant. “If children practice proper oral hygiene and eat healthy foods now, they have a better chance of having strong teeth for the rest of their life.”
“The West Shore School District is excited to partner with Capital BlueCross on a Healthy Habits Health Fair at Washington Heights Elementary,” said Debra Barr, the district’s certified school dental hygienist. “We appreciate the opportunity to highlight the importance of good dental health habits and teach the children about other habits that are key to their overall health. This health fair is the ideal forum to engage students in learning the connection between good dental health, good nutrition and a healthy body.”
Local children’s author Floyd Stokes read his popular book Say Ahh! The Teeth Book. The book features a variety of animated animals teaching important dental health facts to children.
As a strong community partner, the company also had a member of the Capital BlueCross Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) department on hand to lead a Good Dental Health = Good Overall Health coloring session. CHIP enrollment information was provided for children to take home to their parents.
CHIP provides comprehensive health insurance coverage for children up to age 19 including dental and medically-necessary orthodontic services. CHIP is available to any uninsured child in Pennsylvania regardless of family income. For most families, CHIP is free. Higher income families contribute to the cost through the low cost or full cost CHIP programs. View information and to apply for CHIP or call 1.800.KIDS.101.
