  • Capital BlueCross Goes Orange to Raise Awareness of Dangers of Distracted Driving
Company teams up with Owen’s Foundation for ‘Orange Out’

Harrisburg, Pa. (April 7, 2016) – Hundreds of Capital BlueCross employees in Harrisburg and the Lehigh Valley donned orange today to raise awareness of the tragic consequences of distracted driving. According to federal highway statistics, more than 3,000 people were killed, and more than 431,000 people were injured, in vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2014.

Capital BlueCross has teamed up with Owen’s Foundation to raise awareness of the dangers of distracted driving in an effort to prevent these avoidable incidents.

Owen’s Foundation was created in honor of 8-year-old Owen Brezitski, who was hit and killed by a distracted driver while walking in a crosswalk with his family in Harrisburg in 2011. Orange was Owen’s favorite color and is the symbol of the foundation. The foundation’s mission is to promote pedestrian, driver, traffic and childhood safety as well as raise awareness of the consequences of distracted driving.

Capital BlueCross employees voluntarily signed pledges promising not to drive distracted. Additionally, the Capital Blue health and wellness stores in Enola and Center Valley sold orange smoothies and held special paint and create events with all proceeds going to Owen’s Foundation.

At a lunch-and-learn event at Capital BlueCross’ headquarters, Owen’s mother, Karen Brezitski, spoke about Owen and how her family has turned tragedy into a mission.

“Driving is not a multitask activity,” Brezitski said. “It requires constant, focused attention. It is my hope and prayer that, by sharing our story, those listening will examine their own behavior behind the wheel and make necessary changes to decrease their distractions so that lives may be saved."

David Skerpon, Capital BlueCross vice president of consumer experience, said, “National studies show that when you text, you take your eyes off the road for an average of five seconds. When traveling at 55 miles per hour, that's enough time to cover the length of a football field blindfolded. Driving without engaging in distractions like texting is something we all can and must do. It save lives.”

Capital BlueCross prides itself on being a strong community partner. As more than an insurance company, employees participate in community and charitable events throughout the year.
