    Employee wellness program also features new anticancer lifestyle, financial health initiatives

    Harrisburg (April 12, 2016) – Leading by example, Capital BlueCross is taking a stand this year to further improve the health of its employees. The company’s employee wellness program now offers height-adjustable standing desks as part of its efforts to encourage employees to move more during the workday and to help prevent the potential health hazards of sitting for long periods of time.

    Studies increasingly indicate higher rates of obesity and other health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer and death, among those who sit for prolonged periods.

St. Hilaire, president and CEO of Capital BlueCross. “Sitting for long periods of time on the job can be bad for the body in so many ways. So we’re offering our employees standing desks, giving them the option to switch between sitting or standing throughout the work day. It’s one more way we are investing in our most important resource, our Capital BlueCross team members, so they can be at their best for our valued customers and the communities we serve.”

    In addition to standing desks, the Capital BlueCross’ nationally-recognized employee wellness program now also includes a ground-breaking anticancer lifestyle program and a focus on financial well-being.

    The anticancer lifestyle program is a transformation plan for people diagnosed with cancer. Evidence exists that a healthy diet, adequate physical activity, lowered exposure to toxins, social support, and stress management all help to maximize the body’s natural defenses against cancer. The three-month program provides participants with information and tools to sustain these desirable lifestyle changes, and also connects employees with other survivors within the company for support and friendship.

    “Our anticancer lifestyle program is groundbreaking in an employer setting, and by all accounts it has overwhelmingly helped participants regain a sense of control when facing the uncertainties and fears associated with cancer reoccurrence,” said Kieran Hull, vice president of human resources and chair of the committee that oversees the employee wellness program. “Feedback from participants and instructors about the anticancer lifestyle program is amazingly positive and heartwarming.”

    Financial health, another new component of the Capital BlueCross employee wellness program, aims to help employees better understand their personal finances, protect their financial information, and provides employees with tools and information to make good financial decisions for their personal circumstances. Having a greater sense of control over personal finances can improve one’s overall health and well-being.

    Capital BlueCross employees consistently give high ratings to the company’s wellness program. Additionally, the non-profit Health Education Research Organization (HERO) has scored Capital BlueCross’ wellness program at nearly twice the national average and in the top 15 percent of companies nationwide. And in each of the past three years, the American Heart Association has recognized Capital BlueCross as a Fit Friendly Worksite at the Platinum Level, the highest level possible.

    Other health and wellness offerings for Capital BlueCross employees include financial rewards for making healthy choices such as getting a flu shot, joining a gym or getting a preventative medical screening.
